PRESS AGENCY
Ever since the first press agency opened in the UK in the 19th Century, newspapers regularly call on them to fill their pages.

An estimated 80 per cent of stories and pictures in a UK newspaper will come from a freelance or press agency looking to sell their story or photos.

Even though the UK press agency is still largely an unknown quantity to the general public, every day press agency reporters and photographers across the UK are bringing newspapers and magazines the stories that matter.

Newspapers and broadcasters frequently commission press agency journalists to carry out assignments across the UK on their behalf, and many press agency reporters are prepared to work on a freelance basis for a whole host of publishers.

In many years gone by the average press agency might have bashed out their stories on an old typewriter then phoned them through to copy desks across the UK whilst photo journalists wanting to sell their pictures would have had to deliver their prints by train.

But in the last 20 years the face of the UK press agency has changed for ever with many pursuing celebrity stories and photos.

Many press agency staff also supplies services in the public relations sector while others make regular contributors to radio and TV.

Now the internet has thrown up many new opportunities for the press agency and technology has allowed them to produce more material.

Cavendish is the only independent press agency in Manchester selling news pictures celebrity phones and story ideas to the newspapers and magazines.

The Manchester press agency has been involved in many ground breaking stories in Manchester including the crimes of Harold Shipman and the Strangeways riots.

Cavendish Press Agency, Manchester is a member of the National Association of Press Agencies a trade association representing several press agencies across the UK.

The NAPA website says: "NAPA members jealously guard their hard-won reputation for journalistic excellence.

"And it's precisely because of their high reputation that clients return day-after-day to NAPA agencies for the news and pictures that matter."
